The coffin containing the body of President Hugo Chavez was transfered today from the hospital where he died on Tuesday to the military academy where it will remain until Friday's funeral.

Thousands of people surrounded the coffin, which was draped in the Venezuelan flag. Among them was Chavez's mother Elena Frias, Bolivia's President Evo Morales and Venezuela's Vice-President Nicolas Maduro.

The Venezuelan government declared a week of mourning, school was suspended and various Latin American heads of state are expected to arrive in the coming hours.
