A new poll found that 50% of the voting public supports Donald Trump's proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the United States until he can "figure out what's going on."
According to the data from Morning Consult, support is highest among likely Republican voters in general (71%) and Trump voters specifically (84%), but the poll also found that a not insignificant percentage of Democrats back the unconstitutional ban, too.
Among likely Democratic voters, 34% reported total support for the proposal. Hillary Clinton supporters backed the ban at a slightly higher percentage (37%) than Bernie Sanders supporters (27%).
The poll found similar levels of support among Democrats for Ted Cruz's idea to "patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods," which he has called a revival of New York City's own—indisputably failed—program of religious profiling. All told, 35% of Democrats said they would support policing that targeted Muslims.
That program, which sent plainclothes police officers to spy on Muslim New Yorkers, was a civil rights disaster. It also failed miserably in its apparent objective of gathering intelligence.
When asked why the city had disbanded the program, New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said, plainly: “Not one single piece of actionable intelligence ever came out of that unit in its years of existence."
