The Clinton Foundation only pays women 72 cents for every dollar men make, according to an email between Clinton campaign staffers published by WikiLeaks this week.
Clinton campaign staffer Karuna Seshasai emailed the information to Democratic operative Ian Mandel. “3 out of the 11 highest paid employees of the Foundation are women. Avg salary of the highest paid men is $294,157.50, while the avg salary of the highest paid women is $181,576.66 ($112K difference). Median salary of the highest paid men is $346,106, while the median salary of the highest paid women is $185,386 ($190K difference),” she wrote.
Mandel forwarded her data to campaign manager Robby Mook and campaign research director Tony Carrk, adding, “Given the story yesterday about pay equity at the State Department, I wanted to flag something that came out of our research on pay equity at the Foundation. There are huge discrepancies, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they went here next.”
The story he was referring to reported that, as a senator, Clinton also paid women 72 cents for every dollar she paid men. It was published by conservative website the Washington Free Beacon, which has also reported that, while Clinton was Secretary of State, the State Department paid men more than women. In separate emails published by WikiLeaks, in 2011, the Clinton Foundation paid men an average of $8,000 more a year than women. The 72 cents on the dollar made by female Clinton Foundation staffers is lower than the average for nonprofits, 75 cents.
Hillary Clinton regularly talks about the gender wage gap in stump speeches, and lists it as her first priority under “Women’s rights and opportunity” on her campaign website. The Clinton Foundation has disputed the figures, saying they “do not provide an accurate portrayal of the leadership and staff at Clinton Foundation.” U.S. officials have repeatedly said that Russia is behind the hacks of Podesta’s emails, and there’s a good case to be made that Julian Assange is running an operation to discredit Clinton, who has refused to verify whether the emails are real and has her surrogates question their veracity at every opportunity.
