We all need friends like Kanye West. He’s always looking out to make sure his friends and family get the respect they deserve and has no problems dishing out compliments if he feels they are on the same level of “genius” and “influence” as him. To name a few: Beyonce, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and now Frank Ocean.
At his Oakland Saint Pablo concert last night, the rapper told the audience that he would boycott the Grammys if Frank Ocean’s album Blond isn’t nominated. “The album I listened to the most this year is Frank Ocean’s album,” he said. “As artists, we gotta come together to fight the bullshit they been throwing us with.”
West had good intentions. Blond was one of the most anticipated and arguably best albums of the year, and we, too, are disappointed that it’s not getting the recognition it deserves. But it seems like maybe Mr. West didn’t do his research or wasn’t informed that Ocean actually is ineligible for any Grammy nominations because of his management’s failure to submit Blond and his visual album Endless for Grammy consideration by the September 30 deadline.
Currently, Frank has two Grammys under his belt for Channel Orange and “No Church In The Wild,” which he shares with Kanye West and Jay Z. According to a source that spoke to Billboard, it was ultimately the decision of Frank Ocean and his management team not to submit his albums Blond or Endless. Don’t expect a further explanation than that, though, because Frank Ocean just gave his first interview in three years at the White House and it was about his sneakers.
The Recording Academy has not yet issued a response to Kanye West’s plans to boycott. That said, we’re hoping Kanye changes his mind and comes out for Chance the Rapper and maybe, just maybe, performs “Ultralight Beam.”
