Last night, former House speaker and current Trump surrogate Newt Gingrich appeared on Fox News’ “The Kelly File” to talk with host Megyn Kelly about the state of the election. The conversation started off normally—a few questions about Trump’s terrible poll numbers—then took a hard right turn into Crazytown.
Pressed to defend Trump from ten (and counting) allegations of sexual assault, Gingrich went on the offensive against Kelly, saying “He’s not a sexual predator. I’m sick and tired of people like you using language that’s inflammatory.” He then accused Kelly of being “fascinated by sex,” and attacked the mainstream media (including Fox News, it seems) for not caring enough about public policy and focusing too much attention on Trump’s lasciviousness.
“You know what Mr. Speaker, I’m not fascinated by sex. But I am fascinated by the protection of women, and understanding what we’re getting in the Oval Office,” Kelly replied.
Gingrich—who, let’s not forget, had an extramarital affair while dragging Bill Clinton through the mud for his infidelities with Monica Lewinsky—then tried to change the subject to the former president, calling him a “sexual predator” who doesn’t belong in the East Wing of the White House, and badgering Kelly to say the words “Bill Clinton, sexual predator.”
Kelly, clearly exasperated, shot back, “You can take your anger issues and spend some time working on them, Mr. Speaker.”
The whole fiery exchange is below:
Dan Scavino, Trump’s social media advisor, thought the exchange went well for Gingrich:
But pretty much everyone else disagreed:
