Today, dozens of students from Arizona’s North High School got up in the middle of their classes and walked out of the building in a protest of Joe Arpaio, the known racist running for re-election as Maricopa County’s sheriff, and Donald Trump.
Rather than simply taking to the streets to voice their displeasure with Arpaio, the Arizona students used their walkout as a chance to canvas their neighborhood with fliers for the incumbent’s opponent and a blow-up an effigy of the conservative lawman.
“[These] are not kids that can vote, but the ones we’ve talked to so far say that they are out here because they are trying to get rid of Joe Arpaio,” MSNBC’s Gadi Schwartz reported from the scene. “A lot of them [are] expressing some very anti-Trump sentiments.”
As Schwartz strode down the street with a group of the protestors, one jumped into the camera’s view and gleefully shouted “fuck Joe Arpaio” for reasons that are probably clear if you know anything about the man’s toxic political and social beliefs.
In late October, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton officially charged Arpaio with contempt of court for repeatedly ignoring orders to instruct officers from within his police department not to racially profile and harass members of Maricopa County’s Latinx community. According to a number of different cases brought against Arpaio and the MCPD, officers would often target Latinx people on the unsubstantiated assumption that they were undocumented immigrants and harass them for no legally sanctioned reason.
