As Donald Trump’s path to the presidency became clear, one pundit on CNN delivered the night’s very first distillation of what Trump’s win will really mean for people of color in America.

After Van Jones started with a classy “good for you” for pro-Trump pundit Jeffrey Lord, he launched into the “nightmare” people are facing as the results come in.

“It’s hard to be a parent tonight, for a lot of us,” he said. “You have people putting children to bed tonight and they’re afraid of breakfast.”

“How do you explain this to your children? I’ve had Muslim friends who are texting me tonight, saying, ‘should I leave the country?’” he continued.

Then Jones, who was getting visibly emotional, brought the hammer down.

“We’ve talked about everything but race tonight,” he said. “This was a whitelash – this was a whitelash against a changing country. It was whitelash against a black president, in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes.”
