Trump's America

A Muslim driver was subjected to a viciously racist, pro-Trump rant—and he filmed the whole thing

Donald Trump may have lost the New York City borough of Queens by a margin of nearly 4-to-1, but that doesn’t mean his impending presidency hasn’t emboldened some residents to voice their anti-Muslim bigotry in the most noxious way possible.

In video taken by an Uber driver identified only by his first name, Muhammed, an unnamed motorist can be seen letting loose with an expletive-laden torrent of racism while stopped alongside Muhammed’s car in Astoria, Queens.

“Fucking Arab motherfucker,” the man exclaimed angrily. Later, he berated Muhammed, saying “Trump is president, asshole. So you can kiss your fucking visa goodbye, scumbag. They’ll deport you soon. Don’t worry, you fucking terrorist.”

It is unclear what prompted the driver’s tirade.

Muhammed, who has reportedly been living in New York City for at least six years since moving to the United States from Morocco, was prompted to share his video of the incident after striking up a conversation with his next customer, history professor Chris Cody.

Speaking with the Washington Post, Cody recalled the exchange: “Right before I picked you up, I had a horrible incident,” he said Muhammed told him.

“What happened?” Cody asked.

“Let me show you,” Muhammed replied.

After being persuaded by Cody to upload the video, Muhammed’s footage was boosted by YouTube personality Karim Metwaly, whose post on the incident has been shared over 50,000 times since November 17.

The tirade has been roundly condemned by authorities and civil rights groups, including the area’s state senator Michael Gianaris who, in a statement on Facebook, said:

Hateful rhetoric should not be tolerated in a neighborhood where all races and different beliefs are welcome. More than ever, now is the time to unite and organize. We will stand together against cowardly attacks and show that our values and vision for our country will triumph over hate.

“Incidents like this are not new. Racism and Anti-Muslim bigotry are real threats to our community,” the Arab-American Family Support Center said in response to Sen. Gianaris’ denunciation of the verbal assault. “Thank you State Sen. Michael Gianaris and many others for standing up against hate. We long for the day when we do not have to bear witness to these injustices.”
