UPDATE, 12/14/16: Yasmin Seweid, the woman who made the claims in this story, has admitted to fabricating her account, the New York Daily News reports. She has now been charged with filing a false report.
An American-born Muslim teen claims she was harassed on a New York City subway by a trio of drunk Donald Trump supporters—and worse, she says, no one came to her defense.
According to Yasmin Seweid, 18, a group of three white men began yelling at her as she rode the 6 train home after an event at Baruch College on December 1.
“I heard them talk, but I had my headphones in, I wasn’t really listening, I had a long day, Seweid told CBS News. “And they came closer and I distinctly heard them saying, ‘Donald Trump.” Speaking with the New York Daily News, she said, “I also heard them say the word ‘terrorist’ and I sort of got a little scared.” Seweid said that, at one point, one of her assailants ripped the strap of the bag she was carrying, and eventually grabbed at the hijab she was wearing, telling her, “take that rag off your head.”
“They kept saying, ‘you don’t belong here, get out of this country, go back to your country,” she told CBS.
According to Seweid, who was born in Brooklyn to Egyptian parents, fellow straphangers gawked at the assault happening before their eyes, but not a single one of them stepped in to help. On Facebook, she wrote about the incident, calling it “dehumanizing” and “traumatizing.”
“It breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs,” Sewied explained in her post, which has been shared nearly 1,000 times since December 2. “Trump America is real and I witnessed it first hand last night!”
Speaking with the Daily News, Yasmin’s father Sayeed blasted those who allegedly stood by while his daughter was assaulted.
“Nobody even offered to help an 18-year-old girl,” he told the paper. “That means something. Her phone was dying. You offer help — it doesn’t matter the race, religion, or the country.”
While the New York Police Department searches for the three assailants, Yasmin herself places the blame for her assault on President-elect Donald Trump.
“The president-elect just promotes this stuff and is very anti-Muslim, very Islamophobic,” she told CBS. “And he’s just condoning it.”
Yasmin’s experience seems to be one of the growing number of racially motivated attacks that have occurred in the wake of Donald Trump’s surprise electoral victory.
According to CBS, Seweid’s attack is being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force.
