Less than a month after it suspended him, Twitter on Saturday reinstated the verified account of Richard Spencer, the openly white supremacist leader in the so-called “alt-right” movement. As it turns out, he was suspended not because he regularly tweets about the superiority of the white race, but because he broke a minor site rule.

Spencer, who leads the white supremacist think tank National Policy Institute, was pulled off the site for violating Twitter’s rules by creating multiple redundant accounts, according to an email from the site obtained by BuzzFeed.

The leading white nationalist, who’s been the subject of many weirdly fawning profiles since slithering into the American consciousness, was pushed out during a broader crackdown on abusive and racist accounts that was seen as a new, more serious approach by Twitter to handling hatred on its platform.

Shortly after being reinstated, Spencer was already up to his same old brand of pseudo-Nazi garbage.
