On Saturday, Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of this year’s NFL draft. The selection makes Sam—the Southeastern Conference’s defensive player of the year—the first openly gay player to be drafted, an event that many see as being on par with Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier. Unfortunately, much like in Robinson’s era, not everyone was happy with progress, and some used their children as an excuse to justify their bigotry. “How will I talk to my kids about Michael Sam?” This hypothetical group of people who aren’t comfortable with the prospect of a man loving another man.
