Barbara Walters May Have Kicked Down Doors, But These Things Still Suck For Female Journalists


Barbara Walters is leaving the camera after a 50-year career. Alicia Menendez took the opportunity to reflect on Walters’ legacy and the status of women in journalism. According to a 2013 study by Media Matters for America, women make up only 38 percent of U.S. newsroom staffers. What’s worse is the number has stagnated over the past 14 years.

We sat down with Media Make Change Founder Tara L. Conley and PolicyMic Executive Social Editor Elizabeth Plank to talk about the ways new media has created space for more female voices and people of color in journalism.
