Does Donald Trump actually care about the black community?
Every presidential candidate writes a book these days. Fusion’s Jorge Ramos pressed Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley on when his will be published, since he said he is “seriously considering” running for president in 2016.
“I’m always writing, Jorge,” O’Malley said. “In the process of looking at this, you do a lot of reflecting and so stay tuned.”
The Maryland governor has not been shy about his interest in running for president. He has already visited the early primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire. He is also raising money for Democratic candidates and burnishing his liberal credentials.
“I am seriously considering running in 2016,” O’Malley told Ramos. “But the most important politics of all is to govern well.”
O’Malley’s ambitions, however, could create friction with some established party leaders. If he runs, O’Malley could face former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is widely expected to be a Democratic candidate in the presidential race. O’Malley endorsed Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary. The two-term governor also found himself in a dustup with the White House over how to respond to the tens of thousands of Central American migrants who have crossed the border into the United States. During his discussion with Ramos, O’Malley downplayed any intra-party tensions.
“I have certainly cherished my relationship and working relationship not only with Secretary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, but also with President Obama,” he said.
Ramos asked O’Malley why he would want to run for president against a past ally like Clinton.
“I love my country and I believe our country’s best days are still ahead of us, but I believe also that we need to make better choices,” he said. “You ask why would anyone want to run for president and I hope it’s because they love their country and they believe they offer the leadership that can help move us forward.”
Jorge Ramos, one of the most influential journalists of the day, goes wherever the story is to bring you a bold and uncompromising look at the issues that matter most to you.
