Jewelers wouldn’t sell Samuel Eto’o a watch because they thought he might be involved in a Nigerian credit card scam

Recently, Samuel Eto’o tried to buy a $15,000 watch in London, but the jeweler pretended his credit card got declined because she thought he might be part of a Nigerian scam. To answer your questions: Yes, people still buy watches; yes, that’s shitty; and no, I’m not making this up.

Let’s let Eto’o take it away: “I asked the saleswoman — who was also black like me — ‘Could you show me that watch please?’ Eto’o said, according to CNN. “First, I saw her turn and look at her coworkers like, ‘Uh, what should I do?'”

She let Eto’o see it, who decided to buy the watch. However, she brought his credit card back and said it had been declined.

“I asked her, ‘Was it declined or did you not want it to be accepted?’ because this has happened to me many times, and she told me, ‘No, it was declined.'”

Eto’o called his brother, who had another credit card and speaks better English. His brother confronted the saleswoman and the security guard.

“My brother can afford this and the way you’re treating him shows that you think just because he’s black, he can’t afford this watch,” the brother said.

This is when it gets fun. (N.B. At no point is this story fun.)

The lady explained that the store had been duped recently. “We had some Nigerians in the store the other day who came with fake credit cards,” she said.

During the exchange, Eto’o told the security guard who he is. Namely, that he’s Samuel Eto’o, the former Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter, and Chelsea striker, who isn’t even Nigerian (he’s Cameroonian) — not that it matters. The security guard, from Senegal, immediately perked up and asked for a picture to send his wife. The couple had just discussed Eto’o a few days earlier.

Eto’o agreed to take a picture. He’s a much better man than I.
