No he can't: Has President Obama doomed the Democrats for the midterms?

In the leadup to this November’s midterm elections, a new Washington Post-ABC news poll finds that President Obama is losing the confidence of the very voters who ushered him into office in 2008 and again in 2012. The President’s approval rating is down among women, young voters, and Latinos — voting blocs that will be critical in November.

Fusion’s Alicia Menendez sat down with Rock the Vote’s and political analyst Zerlina Maxwell to discuss the implications of the poll’s findings and the issues behind the numbers.

“I think people are disenchanted and disillusioned,” Gelman told Menendez. “They felt excitement and hope and enthusiasm and optimism around President Obama’s candidacy… but I think with the fatigue of the second term and his inability to get so much of his agenda forward because of congressional gridlock, I just think that young people feel like they have no hope in the system.”

The question then becomes whether or not that loss of faith in the system, political parties, and individual candidates will translate into a decrease in participation among young voters.

“I think one of the things we realized between 2010 and 2012 is that not voting in 2010 set up the sort of situation and reality where we have obstruction,” Maxwell explained. “I think young people now are much more engaged… and I do think they will vote in the midterm election.”

Time will tell.
