Former U.S. spy chief: Trump’s remarks are already making America unsafe

In his new book, former CIA and NSA chief Michael Hayden recounts his tenure as America’s top spy, and the measures he took that, he says, made America safer.

Now retired, Hayden has had time to observe the 2016 presidential campaign. And, from a national security perspective, he is concerned about what he has heard. In particular, he is alarmed about Donald Trump’s proposal to close U.S. borders to Muslims. The remarks themselves, Hayden said, have already made America less safe.

“Our enemy in this, and it’s a very narrow portion of Islam – the jihadists – are trying to tell the rest of the Muslim world there is undying enmity between Islam and the west. that’s simply not true. We need to push back on that, [and] it’s really hard to push back against what when a leading presidential candidate is saying we need to close our border to everyone in that religion.”

He also said that Trump’s proposal to kill the families of terrorists would make for bad national security policy.

“Number 1, it’s illegal. Number 2, it’s unethical. And Number 3, it’s operationally a really bad idea. It won’t help us win the war,” he said. “So I’m concerned about that.”
